“12053” Residential Buildings in Berlin-Neukölln
The project is situated next to the original premises of the Kindl brewery in the district of Neukölln, with traditional Berlin tenement blocks to the north and less homogeneous modern developments to the south. The challenge is to achieve a natural reconciliation between these two conflicting urban landscapes. On the empty lot between Mainzer Straße and the historic brewery, two new buildings of up to seven storeys are to take shape; the differences in height are due to the area’s topography. A shared underground car park will link the two buildings. Seventy apartments will be in the western block, with another forty-nine in the second building. The L-shaped buildings define a shared garden area at the rear and, in front of the second building, a small square with the old brewery opposite. The rendered facades of the two new buildings reflect the style and colour scheme of late-nineteenth-century architectures in Neukölln’s north.
